In the earlier days of internet marketing, it was easy to be found and show up on the first page of Google. But Google’s algorithms have changed several times.  Now, not only is it difficult to improve ranks, but you also get penalized for mistakes.

1. Optimize Your Website

Let’s begin with the basics firsts. I won’t go into any details here, but as a starting step, get your website in order and make sure that it is optimized for your relevant keywords so people can find you on Google.

Key Points:

  • Optimize your website so people can find you on Google.

2. Set Up A Blog

Starting a blog is a tip that you would already be aware of and may even have put into practice. Blogs are an effective way to market your business online, but they are a long-term strategy. You won’t get results overnight, but when they start to show, you’ll reap the rewards.

Blogs don’t only improve SEO and traffic generation, but also establish your credibility and help you become an authority. Your readers develop trust in you and turn to you for advice.

The biggest mistakes made are that entrepreneurs don’t provide value. Your blog post must offer valuable information to readers: suggestions, advice, ‘how-to’s, news, or even something humorous would do, as long as it’s valuable and original.

The post flow should also be consistent. It won’t help if you post 3 to 4 blogs this month and none the next one. Generally, people consider 2 to 3 blogs per week as sufficient. If you focus on longer posts, you can even post once a week.

Whatever frequency you decide on, keep to that schedule.

Key Points:

  • Blogs are an effective way to market your business online and establish you as an authority, but they are a long-term strategy.
  • Your blog post must offer valuable information to readers.
  • Blog frequently and keep to that schedule.

3. Get The Word Out On Quora And Medium

Is your domain fairly new, not even two years old? During the first few days of your business, you should market your business online by being active on websites like Quora and Medium to lead people to your website. Begin by writing an amazing piece that is valuable and insightful, helping readers in some way to solve a problem.

Target keywords relevant to your niche, and post the article on your website. Then write another piece that also targets the same set of keywords. Link this article to the one on your website by anchoring primary keywords.  Share the second piece on Quora and other similar websites.

Key Points:

  • Being active on websites like Quora and Medium lead people to your website.

4. Leverage The Power Of Social Media Advertising

Social media is one of the most rewarding ways to promote your business. The number of social media users this year is estimated to be 3.196 billion. Considering Facebook, the average post reach vs. page like is 10.7% and the average reach for paid posts is around 26.8%. Nielsen reports that Americans spend 22% of their internet time on Facebook.

Social media is a powerful tool that can skyrocket your business. I have seen so many people soar only because they acted on the advice, utilized recommended products, and learned to use social media effectively.  Keep in mind that social media doesn’t only help with traffic or leads. It also engages your customers and helps you keep them. It is more cost-effective to keep and market to existing customers than to get new customers.

Social media advertising isn’t free. Whatever money you put into it will multiply the rewards, provided you do it right. Like with every promotional campaign, you need to work on the message and the ad copy. When you do advertising wrong, you may lose a lot of money on paid advertising.

Segment customers based on their interests, locations, marital statuses, ages, and other factors. Create separate ads for each customer segment and send them to specifically targeted landing pages. This will increase your success rate.

The landing page design is also an important element. You can develop landing pages and funnels using, for instance, ClickFunnels or Lead Pages. We’ll leave the details for another day.

Key Points:

  • Social media is a powerful tool that can skyrocket your business.
  • Social media advertising will multiply the rewards for your business, provided you do it right.

5. Reach Out On LinkedIn

Are you a member of LinkedIn? Which groups do you belong to? Groups are wonderful places to connect with other professionals and experts.

You can also use LinkedIn for promoting content but please don’t spam or hard sell your product. Like you, nobody else likes to be spammed. Strike up conversations and share good advice; post links only if they are relevant to the discussion.

Remember, every social platform has a ‘code of conduct’. It will pay to find out what it is for every platform you use and to respect it.

Key Points:

  • LinkedIn groups are wonderful places to connect with other professionals and experts.
  • Every social platform has a ‘code of conduct’ and you should respect it.

6. Promote Your Business Through Instagram Influencers

Instagram can work wonders in the online world, but only when you have followers in the millions or at least thousands. Most of the people who come to us and want to know more about how to market your business are at the beginning of their entrepreneurial journeys.

What does that imply? If you have limited followers on Instagram, it means that you cannot really use its potential fully. One solution is that you can partner up with other influencers on Instagram. Choose powerful users who can connect you to a huge audience interested in your niche, and then spread the word through them.

First, build a relationship with these influencers and give value to them before you ask for any favors.  Always give before you ask.

Key Points:

  • Partner up with other influencers on Instagram.
  • Build a relationship with influencers and give value to them before you ask for any favors.

7. Develop Enticing Video

Video marketing can increase your brand awareness by 54%. Over 8 billion videos are watched on Facebook alone on a daily basis, which makes it one of the most powerful ways to promote your business online.

So start creating videos. Set up your own YouTube channel and attract viewers to your blog and social media. Like with any other form of content you create, your videos must offer value. Education is the basic aim here and your profits will only increase indirectly as more people are attracted to you and your business.

One thing to note here: video marketing provides you with leads, but the best, most popular, most viewed and most successful videos are less than 2 minutes long. Yes, 120 seconds is the only amount of time you have to attract or repel a customer.

The ideal length for Facebook marketing videos is 60 seconds. For some social media platforms, the best videos are even shorter. The ideal video durations for popular social media platforms, as determined by HubSpot, are given below.

Develop enticing video

Key Points:

  • Video marketing is powerful.
  • Keep videos short and sweet to attract viewers.

8. Send Emails To Your List

So many entrepreneurs believe that email marketing has lost its power in today’s times. But that is an incorrect assumption. Changing times means that the format, layout, and content of your email should change, and also how you are getting all those email addresses. Email marketing is still one of the most powerful tools to make sales.

What remains the same is that email marketing is a direct marketing method that allows you to step right into the personal zones of potential customers.

So, here’s the fundamental question: how do you get all those email addresses?

You can buy them, but that’s where people go wrong. Buying email addresses won’t provide you any quality leads. In the bluntest of words, you’ll be wasting your time and money in trying to convert them.  People on a bought email list have no relationship with you and therefore don’t like or trust you enough to pull out their wallets.

Collect email addresses through other means. One of the best ways is to give away a free gift in exchange for an email address. You can either spend some time on creating a white paper or eBook. Cheat sheets, infographic, and blueprints are also popular.

Yes, collecting email addresses in this way takes some time. But all the quality leads are worth the efforts you’ll be makin. You can launch a well-crafted email campaign, using any Autoresponder tool, for instance, ConvertKit or Aweber

Like with every other content you create, your emails should also offer value to the reader. Don’t bombard them with offer after offer because they will unsubscribe. I just cannot emphasize giving value enough.

Key Points:

  • Email marketing is still one of the most powerful tools to build relationships and make sales.
  • You must always be collecting email subscribers into your business.
  • Your emails should also offer value to the reader.

9. Use TripAdvisor Or Angie’s List To Connect To A Larger Audience

If you’re a travel-related business, then TripAdvisor is for you, or if you sell a service, then you should try Angie’s List. Websites of this sort are great ways for finding local businesses, allowing you to connect with a large audience who are looking for related products and services.

Spend some time and develop a good listing. Now request your current clients or customers to post reviews. Reviews matter significantly in the online world as it is a form of social proof.

Another benefit is that the links you get help you with SEO. This will boost your website ranking.

Key Points:

  • Spend some time and develop a good listing if you're a local business.
  • Request your current clients or customers to post reviews.

10. Develop Trust And Nurture Lasting Relationships To Get More Sales

What holds businesses back? The fact that their potential customers don’t trust them enough! Developing trust takes time, but a good way to start is to make use of websites like Trustpilot and Yelp.

Both these websites are dedicated to helping potential customers find a company that offers the products or services they’re looking for. These websites provide experiences of past customers with a particular company, which helps potential customers in making a decision.

Create a presence on these websites, build transparency, and become more credible in your industry.

Key Points:

  • Create a presence on review websites, build transparency and become more credible in your industry.

11. Collaborate With Influential Bloggers To Get You Started

I’ve already talked about blogs, but the discussion was only limited to your website blog. Another equally effective blogging aspect is to collaborate with other well-known bloggers in your niche.

Try to find these influencers and then come up with a way to provide value to them by posting as a guest on their blogs. Once you develop a relationship, request backlinks for your website – but not before you’ve added a great deal of value first.

Key Points:

  •  Collaborate with other well-known bloggers in your niche.
  •  Come up with a way to provide value to them by posting as a guest on their blogs.

12. Offer Something For Free To Get More Leads

Who doesn’t like free gifts? We all do! So sometimes it might work to offer something for free to your customers.  You could set up a short, free consultation session, or give them a basic product or sample.

When giving the freebie away, don’t forget to get the contact details so that you can follow up later. Your email list is the most valuable asset in your business.

Key Points:

  • Give away free items to get contact details of potential customers so that you can follow up later.

13. Build Funnels To Automate Your Sales Process

If you want to get your leads and sales on autopilot, you need sales funnels. In the simplest of terms, this is a purchasing process where you lead your customer on a journey to buy your products or services.

It is nothing more than a roadmap where you control where they go and what they see next. You need to create such a systematic process to drive sales and profits even when you sleep.

The process is fairly simple. First, you find leads, and then turn them into prospects. When prospects buy, they become your customers, which you then turn into repeat customers, who buy from you over and over again.

You can pick any funnel and design that you want, and then change the pages until they reflect your values and are consistent with your branding. Once done, make the funnel live, and then test and tweak until you increase your conversions, sales, and profit.

The key is to remember that leads, prospects, and customers are people with problems and needs, not numbers. Your funnel helps them on the buyers' journey from defining their problem to offering a solution.

Key Points:

  • To get your leads and sales on autopilot, you need sales funnels.
  • A sales funnel is nothing more than a roadmap where you control where visitors go and what they see next.
  • Your business cannot function optimally without sales funnels.
  • Remember leads, prospects, and customers are people with problems and needs, not numbers.
